I reached the same conclusion. You would think that someone with a lower resting heart rate (fit) would have a higher target heart range than someone with a higher resting heart rate (unfit). I could only rationalize that someone not as fit, would have a higher target hart rate range than someone fit because it would take very little activity to get a higher heart rate from someone that is not fit.

In any event there is not much difference (2 or 3) beats per minute betweeen the Karvonen formula and the standard formula.
