Rainer,
In order to peak for an event most people do not race every week (especially as the race distance increases). There are others who like racing and will race whenever they can. This means they are not targetting any particular event but try and do their best in each.
The threshold run, race and long run are all 'hard' runs and you will require some recovery from each type. The amount of recovery will vary for each person. Depending on your make-up you may find the long run hardest or you may find the faster 9race pace) type runs harder. When you are training for a marathon the long runs are probably the 'hardest' runs (needing the most recovery) so these should probably be the ones you substitute for a race. Be careful, however, as long runs are critical to you final marathon performance. If you are only substituting one of the long runs then that is fine.
All the best,
Paul
