Beth,
As we are based in Australia it is very difficult to give specific recommendations on brands as they might not help much. I will try and give general treadmill advice and hope that that helps.
There are many things to look for in buying a treadmill but here are a few that seem important
- Horsepower of the motor. The higher the better. Don't buy anything below 1.5HP
- The maximum speed of the treadmill. Don't think of your racing speed, think more of how fast you can run in a quick burst. Many treadmills max out at 10MPH. Although this is quite fast try and get a higher speed if possible as many people can sprint this fast.
- Noise. DC motors are usually less noisy.
- Cushioning. Each treadmill is different, try before you buy.
Here are some websites that provide more comprehensive information.

http://www.montana.com/stafford/treadmill.html
http://www.bodytrends.com/treadbuy.htm
http://www.fitlink.com/consumer_matters.htm
Two of the above sites have tests with rankings in them. I hope that they help you.
All the best,
Paul
