Irv,

By definition a Max Heart Rate test is quite stressing on the body, so make sure you are medically fit before going to the max.

Many people just wear a Pulse Monitor during a hard race or interval session and look for the maximum reading.

Here is a test that can usually get your pulse up to it's max. Firstly make sure that you have a HR Monitor that can record your maximum pulse. This will stop you from having to look at it when you are at your max. After a suitable warm-up then do 2 lots of 3 minute efforts as hard as you can. Have a break of around 1 minute between the two hard efforts. Your max pulse should be reached somewhere near the end of the second 3 minute effort. Cool-down by jogging slowly.

Remember to check it every 6 months or so as it can vary as your fitness improves.

Regards

Paul
