Further to the foregoing information posted on the subject of heart rate zones. To optimise the use of target training zones, it is far more important to correctly identify the anaerobic threshold with it's co-responding heart rate as the starting point for the application of any formula. To this end, I have always used the Conconni test to identify this HR point. The Conconni test also carries the additional benefit of identifying HR with lap splits. This information can then be used to prescribe repetitions at target splits, thus making the use of HR monitors superflouous for track work.
