Isobella,

I can't really do your assignment for you but can give you a few pointers.

The periodization and focus for a training plan is dependent on many factors but a couple of important ones are the distance of the race and the number of weeks before the race. For longer races you need to focus on building up your endurance and stamina whilst speed is important for the shorter distances.

There are at least 4 Macrocyles (or phases) to most periodized training plans. In each of these phases the microcyles will differ. You should design a differing microcycle for each of your macrocycles. Four common Macrocycles are base building, strength, speed and taper. The base building focusses on endurance.

Use the elements that you have identified in your microcycles and gradually shift from a distance focus to a strength focus, finishing up with a speed focus and a taper before the race.

For an example of what I mean download RunCoach and get it to suggest a goal and to design a program for a marathon. The phases and individual workouts will be labelled.

All the best,

Paul
