Kelley,
I hope that your shin splints have improved. Your run/walk regime is a good way to gradually build time on the legs. Keep at it.
Each person has differing pulse characteristics. You will have a differing maximum and basal rate than the next person. There is no average that will work for everybody. Everybody also has differing levels of fitness. When you are just beginning you will have both a low VO2max and low anaerobic threshold. This will cause your pulse to race even from minor exertion.
The good news is that you can improve your response to exersize and thereby lower your pulse for the equivalent effort. As you improve the following will occur
- Your basal (resting) pulse will lower as your body finds it needs less effort just to keep going
- Your VO2max will increase (by up to 20%). This will decrease the relative effort required at all levels of exertion
- Your anaerobic(lactic) threshold will increase. This will increase the level at which you start to feel out of breath
Your maximum pulse will not change too much but the other changes will mean that overall your pulse will drop for the same effort.
Don't worry about it too much.
All the best,
Paul
