Kelley,

Shin Splints are a common problem to people new to running. I have seen many people who have started and experienced varying degrees of shin splints. Most of these people however eventually found that they disappeared.

In some extreme cases surgery was effective in fixing them. Shin Splints can come from a variety of causes, and identifying the cause then looking at rectifying it often needs a doctor.

Purserve with the routine trying to contain the problem and hopefully the symptoms will go away. If not be sure to see a doctor.

Keeping to the heart rate or the pace/distance is a very often asked question. It really depends on how much RunCoach knows about you (PB's, age, years training, tested max pulse etc) However here are some general guidelines.

For the long runs use the pulse rate and try not to exceed it. For the AT(threshold) runs use the pace not the HR as anaerobic threshold's vary so much with training. For the intervals use the pace and finally for easy runs use the heart rate.

Hope the above helps

Paul
