Greg,
Runners knee is a common and irritating problem. I will give you some general advice on that in the next posting.
Supplements are always something of an unknown. If you get a recommendation from a doctor then the general advice is either an anti infammatory (eg NSAIDS) and/or a pain killer. There are other untested remedies and if you try some of these then be prepared for many trials before achieving some success.
Glucosomine/Chondroitin Sulfate has been used to treat arthritis. Here are a couple of websites which are optimistic about its affects:
http://www.go-symmetry.com/chondroitin.htm
http://www.go-symmetry.com/glucosamine.htm
http://www.health.simplenet.com/hjointcare.html
There are many more pages like the above, mainly from health food/vitamin outlets who have a vested interest.
This page provides some medical references:
http://www.stoneclinic.com/glucosam.html
And the following pages are sceptical about it's effectiveness.
http://www.wdn.com/mirkin/7031.html
http://www.arthritis.org/pressroom/release/rel_archive/19980301maximizing_cure.shtml
http://www.arthritis.org/resource/statements/glucosamine.shtml
In summary it would seem that there have been some positive responses to it's use however there has been no definitive double blind study.
I haven't used it myself but it may offer some benefits.
All the best,
Paul
