It is good to hear that your training is going well so far. Remember to take it slowly.
There is currently no way to save the default settings on hints and summary displays. I have started using an ini file in beta 1c to save the last user and it should be an easy fix to add something to save the hints and summary settings. I will include it for the next beta release.
I prefer using the heart rate reserve method and have outlined the basics of it as an answer to a question on heart rate's in the discussion database (http://www.sportscoach.com.au/runcoachdiscus/_disc1/0000000e.htm). As the Training Zone(TZ) ranges are reasonably wide there is no major issue in using a straight percentage of max HR. The biggest issue is making sure you calculate your HR the same way that the people who have calculated the TZ percentage!! Often I see recommendations calculated one way with people using another.
